One the great things is that there are minimal barriers to cross-disciplinary working here, making it incredibly easy to collaborate with colleagues across different faculties.

Our research strength

You’ll play a leading part in our triple-accredited Business School, which is one of the largest and most powerful UK communities of business and management researchers, and has been shortlisted for Business School of the Year in the 2022 Times Higher Education Awards.

Our research is led through our Centres for Research and Knowledge Exchange in Business Transformations, Decent Work and Productivity, and Future Economies.

In REF 2021, we submitted 80 researchers to the Business and Management Unit of Assessment, and we ranked 35th out of 108 institutions for research power.

We were ranked 16th nationally for the quality of our impact with case studies on place management, SME growth, good employment and international business. And our research environment, which ranked in the first quartile, was praised for the development of both early and mid-career researchers.

Meanwhile, we lead the sector in Management Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.

Research initiatives

Specialist areas of focus in the Business School include:

  • The Institute of Place Management, where world-renowned researchers are leading the UK Government’s £8.6m High Streets Task Force
  • Research into working lives, which includes a £1m ESRC project on management practices, employment and productivity
  • The Sylvia Pankhurst Gender and Diversity Research Centre
  • Interdisciplinary research into the conditions for the growth of SMEs
  • Research in agency-based social simulation and policy modelling, which has been active since 1991
  • The Sports Policy Unit, which focuses on mega-events, soft power and economic growth
  • Research into public management, tourism, marketing, HRM and entrepreneurship

Funding comes from UKRI, ESRC, Nuffield, The Leverhulme Trust, NIHR, and partnerships with the UK Government and industry.

We collaborate across the region with policymakers on agendas such as good employment, we lead several European and international consortia with networks in China, Australia and New Zealand, and 2023 will see us launch a collaborative DBA programme.

As a researcher, I’ve always been independent, worked hard and had goals. But feeling valued and being recognised by Manchester Metropolitan has made me even more motivated. Wherever you are, someone recognises you and values your contribution, so you will feel rewarded.
